Product Description USA Today bestselling author Susan Mallery returns to the idyllic setting of her sensual Marcelli sisters trilogy -- California wine country, where love and laughter flow, and where an unlikely couple discovers the one thing their hearts hunger for most: a place to call home. The rebel of the Marcelli family, Joe never joined his sisters Katie, Francesca, and Brenna in running the winery business. Instead, he chose a life of military service. But now that this handsome, headstrong former Navy SEAL has received a new, undercover assignment -- protecting none other than the commander in chief's daughter -- he finds himself stationed back at the California vineyard he defiantly left behind. First-daughter Darcy Jensen has been placed in hiding at the Marcelli Winery after surviving a kidnapping attempt . . . and now it's Joe's job to keep the fearful, fiery beauty out of harm's way. Begrudgingly, Joe heeds his presidential order -- until "babysitting" Darcy proves to be the greatest pleasure he's ever known. How can Joe protect Darcy from danger, when he's falling dangerously in love? And can Darcy trust that Joe's intentions are true -- when no one else's have ever been?

You Had Me At "Hey Joe..." July 19, 2008 Susan Mallery is imo, a master literary talent. And from the moment she cast her line in the water with the debut of The Sparkling One, featuring Katie Marcelli, I have been completely hooked by this Italian/Irish blended family. They can be domineering and annoying, but at the end of the day, they prove that home is where the heart is. And the introduction of Joe Larson to the mix was electrifying. I totally "got" this character and the reason behind his seemingly impenetrable shield of armor. I felt his annoyance and frustration at being badgered into a lifestyle he owed it to no one to embrace. Yet at much as Grandpa Lorenzo made me want to smack my palm upside the back of his skull for his sexist insistence of a male dominated family dynasty, I still felt my heart skip a beat at his passing. It's not often that an author can make me feel as if I am part of a family to where their tears and pain of loss mingle with my own. All in all it was my favorite of the five stories that now sit in my collection. The accidental eavesdropping of the supply room shenanighans had me practically rolling with laughter. The high drama had me nibbling a nail. The family loss had me wiping away tears. And in the end...the sealing of the family circle had me cheering from the sidelines. My only complaint is the rather shallow introduction of special agents Paige and Alex. Their love story seemed contrived and rushed with no real depth. This would have been a much better side story all it's own, instead of one hastily tossed into the mix. A one point deduction for what would otherwise have been a five star story.
first time reader of Susan Mallery March 23, 2007 I reallly enjoyed finding this book as now I am looking forward to reading several more written by Ms. Mallery. The characterization was fascinating and I often felt like I was in the kitchen of the winery with the Italian grandmothers and the other cast of characters. The heroine was sympathetic and not an idiot (another big plus); the hero was incredibly stubborn but beginning to thaw; and the scenery and love and mayhem all added to a most enjoyable read. Mia was the only one I found trying.
Great Read January 7, 2007 I started reading this book this morning and finished it this evening. I couldn't put it down. I have not read any of the other books in this series, but plan too. The sneak peak at Mia's story in the back sound very good. I know that reading this one first gave away a lot, but I think going back and reading the others will fill in a lot of blanks for.
4th Book in the series August 28, 2006 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
The Marcelli Bride by Susan Mallery is Joe's story. Joe (ex-Navl SEAL)is ordered home to the Marcelli home to protect the President's daughter. The whole Marcelli gang is back and opens their hearts to Darcy Jensen the President's daughter after she was kidnapped. This is my favoriate of the series so far - everyone is back with all the heart of the soul of the Marcelli Family - plus some danger and mystery. Check out the whole series; The Sparkling One (1),The Sassy One (2),The Seductive One (3), The Marcelli Bride (4),The Marcelli Princess (5 coming out 2007).
The Marcelli Male's Story July 11, 2006 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Navy SEAL Joe Larson is the biological son of Colleen and Marco Marcelli, the result of a teen romance that their parents thought would fizzle out. Several decades and four daughters later, the Marcelli's are still going strong, and after suffering a lonely childhood in the foster system, Joe just wants to be left alone. When a prank by his SEAL team goes awry, he is sent to baby-sit Darcy, the president's daughter while she is hiding from potential kidnappers at the family winery. The last thing Joe expected is to fall for the black sheep of the first family.
Darcy is a plain Jane who likes to wear black and sink into the background. Always a distant second to her blond and buxom sister, she has always felt that she was not enough, especially for her father. At sixteen, she discovered on her mother's deathbed that she was the result of an illicit affair, and her insecurities have only become more prevalent. Add to that the fact that her kidnappers release her because she "is the wrong one." It is enough to make anyone lack self esteem.
Marcelli family patriarch Lorenzo insists that Joe join the family in his rightful place - as the head of the winery operation, despite no desire and no knowledge or interest in wine. Joe resists Lorenzo and the rest of the family at every turn, and tries to resist Darcy, who is more in tune with him than he wants. And his attraction to her is putting her in danger as he cannot control his desires.
Mallery adds another great chapter in the romantic exploits of the Marcelli family. While this is a great stand alone novel, it helps to have a little family background to understand why Lorenzo is so set in his ways about a male heir. Adding tons of comic delight is sister Brenna - in all her pregnant glory. And a secondary romance (though not fully developed) between two of Darcy's security agents adds additional romantic tension.
