Product Description
"The only woman who interests me is you."

—Russ Palmer, rancher

When Taylor Manning accepts a teaching job in Cougar Point, Montana, she discovers that life there is very different from life in Seattle. So are the men! She soon notices a handsome, opinionated, stubborn rancher named Russ Palmer, and he notices her. In fact, they more than notice each other.… After only a few months, Taylor's certain of one thing. Despite their conflicting backgrounds, she'd love to be The Cowboy's Lady.

"I feel as if I've been waiting for you all my life."

—Cody Franklin, sheriff of Custer County

The first day Christy Manning visits her sister, Taylor, she meets Sheriff Cody Franklin. To Christy's shock—and Cody's—they're immediately attracted to each other. Intensely attracted. There's a problem, though. Christy's engaged to someone else, someone back in Seattle. So what's the solution? See what happens when The Sheriff Takes a Wife….

There was nothing likable about the hero in the first story and the girl in the second was an unbelievable whimp. Not a good read.

This is one of the worst! I could not even finish. No single character in this books behaves like a real life person. It reads like a fairy tale for preteens.

Love this book, it is a very sweet love story. Can not wait for the Manning Brides to come out this fall.

3 out of 5 stars Quick, Light Read   March 12, 2008

Debbie Macomber's "The Manning Sisters" consists of two earlier books of hers originally published in the 1990's; "The Cowboy's Lady" and "The Sheriff takes a Wife".

In "The Cowboy's Lady", Taylor Manning has moved from Seattle to Cougar Point, Montana after a failed romance. She is planning to teach there for a year until her heart is healed. The last thing she wants or expects is to fall for Russ Palmer - a rancher who believes women should be barefoot and pregnant. Russ finds he disagrees with Taylor on most things, but they both find it difficult to stay away from each other.

"The Cowboy's Lady" had some good moments. Taylor is a nicely developed character - strong, good at her job as a teacher, recovering from a broken heart and fighting her attraction to Russ. Russ is well written, but his male chauvinistic qualities make him unlikable. Russ's sister Mandy is also well written. There is a nice sense of humor throughout the story including when Russ tries to cook, a scene when Russ is drunk, and a scene where he tries to get Taylor to go to the movies with him. The romantic chemistry between Russ and Taylor is palpable and "The Cowboy's Lady" is steamy for a Debbie Macomber book (which means lots of kissing but nothing else), but ultimately I found Russ to be too much of a chauvinist and wondered why Taylor put up with him.

In "The Sheriff Takes a Wife", Christy Manning travels to Montana to visit her pregnant sister Taylor. Taylor goes into labor right after Christy arrives and Christy meets Sheriff Cody Franklin when he helps get Taylor to the hospital. There is an instant attraction between Cody and Christy but there's also an obstacle - Christy is engaged to someone back in Seattle. Christy must choose between staying engaged or following her heart.

Like "The Cowboys Lady", "The Sheriff Takes a Wife" was an okay romance. Christy is a good heroine, wanting to please everyone, yet not weak. Cody is a great character - hurt in romance before and almost afraid to take another chance on love. The romance between Cody and Christy happens very quickly and the chemistry between them is hot (again, being a Macomber romance, there is only heavy kissing). My biggest problem with this story is that Christy's excuses for first not revealing she is engaged and then not breaking off the engagement began to be unbelievable and some of the circumstances Macomber came up with felt contrived. Ultimately, I felt sorry for Christy's fiance, James. Also, Macomber has a habit of repeating plot devices in her books and the weddings in both stories are strikingly similar.

In the end, "The Manning Sisters" is a quick, light read.

I have read many of Debbie's books this summer & fall. This book was funny easy to read. She lets you feel like you know these folks personally. I am looking forward to reading about the Manning Brothers next.
Thanks Debbie hours of enjoyment
