Product Description Rachel Miller and Darcy Rhone have been best friends since childhood. They've shared birthdays, the horrors of high school and even boyfriends, but while Darcy is the sort of woman who breezes through life getting what she wants when she wants it, Rachel has always played by the rules and watched her stunning best friend steal the limelight. The one thing Rachel's always had over Darcy is the four-month age-gap which meant she was first to being a teenager, first to drive, first to everything ...but now she's about to be first to thirty. And Darcy still has a charmed life. On the eve of her thirtieth birthday, Rachel is shocked to find herself questioning the status quo. How come Darcy gets a glamorous job at a PR firm and the perfect boyfriend, while Rachel grinds away at her despised job as an attorney and remains painfully single. Is it just luck? Or, looking back at their friendship and their lives together, is it a bit more complicated than that? Then an accidental fling complicated everything, and it's time for Rachel to make a few hard choices. And she's forced to learn that sometimes true love comes at a price...

One of the Best Contemporary Romance I've read!!! November 2, 2008 Emily Giffin's protagonist is someone whom every girl can relate to. I can't say enough of how much I feel for the main character! The story is fast-paced, no nonsense, and believable. Truly an enjoyable read! I couldn't put the book down until the very end, and was so sad when I finished the book, because I didn't want the story to end!!!!
Cute adult chick-lit with more substance than fluff. October 26, 2008 This is my first shot at an Emily Giffin novel after receiving several recommendations from friends and I must say that I was very happy with the selection!
It's a quick read that I found hard to put down. I loved the characters, the forbidden love story... and as a 30 year old myself, the 80s pop culture references were a delightful opportunity to giggle.
Something Borrowed October 21, 2008 The story made you take a look at your own girlfriend relationships And asks the question, is your best friend really your best friend?
Don't read before your wedding! October 20, 2008
"Since elementary school, Rachel and Darcy have been best friends, with Darcy always outshining Rachel. While single Rachel is the self-confessed good girl, an attorney trapped at a suffocating New York law firm, Darcy is the complete opposite, a stereotypical outgoing publicist, planning a wedding with the handsome Dex. After Rachel's 30th birthday party, she knocks back one drink too many and winds up in bed with Dex. Instead of feeling guilty about sleeping with her best friend's fiance, Rachel realizes that Dex is the only man she's really loved, and that she's always resented manipulative Darcy. Rachel and Dex spend a few weekends in the city together "working" while Darcy's off with friends at a Hamptons beach share, but finally Rachel realizes she'll have to give Dex an ultimatum." ~ From Publishers Weekly
Admittedly, I should not have been reading this book the week before I left for my wedding, but oh well, I liked it anyway. I have had friends like Darcy who always make you feel about 6 inches tall and it was very satisfying to read about Rachel finally getting back at her toxic friend.
I have very few complaints about "Something Borrowed." While admittedly it was not a riveting story, it was still enjoyable in a chick flick sort of way. Giffin does tend to elaborate on feelings a little much as opposed to progressing her plot, but despite having to skim a few pages here and there the book is charming and has a real-life feel to it as opposed to a corny soap opera motif.
"Something Borrowed" is a fun, no strings attached beach read. I might just even pick up the sequel!
Four Stars.
