5 out of 5 stars Texas Lovin'   November 17, 2008
I must say, right from the beginning, that I found the sex scenes between Steve (Stephanie) Reynolds and Ethan Templeton to be hotter than a scalding steam bath. A reading of certain passages will keep you burning on a cold night.

Steve is a tough gun toting Texas Ranger ready to go after whatever nasties are around. There is, however, another side to her. Steve has dreams of a nice little house with a white picket fence and little kiddies running around the yard. Here's the problem. She is madly in love with Ethan a hot, hunky, sexy guy who is also a vampire. That means no little house, or little kids, and absolutely no picket fence. In a moment of madness she breaks away from Ethan and marries Fred, much to her regret. The marriage didn't last, of course, and as soon as she is once again available Ethan let her know he is ready to take up where they had left off. So is she! Their get-togethers are to die for.

But Bond of Darkness is more than erotic fantasy. It is also a gritty tale of justice seen mainly through the eyes of Steve and Ethan. Steve hunts down dangerous drug dealers and then goes after a serial killer that makes the viciousness of the drug lords look like child's play. Ethan owes allegiance to Don Rafael, a 600 year-old, powerful vampire who rules Texas and Oklahoma. The Don is furious because of the horrific murders that have taken place in his territory. It will be up to Ethan and his men to hunt down the killer.

Steve and Ethan do love one another but Ethan's poor impulse control, even when in Steve's defense, causes a serious breech. Not to worry! This is a romance after all, and a darn good one.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book   November 16, 2008
I like this book but felt that it was not better than her second book. If the author went more into the history of the main characters then I feel the book would have been better.

4 out of 5 stars Less steamy than expected   October 19, 2008

Bond of Darkness by Diane Whiteside
Oversize trade paperback release date: October 7th, 2008
Rating 4 stars

Bond of Darkness is a non-stop vampire thriller. This is the third in Diane Whiteside's Texas trilogy. From page 1, the story begins at full throttle without letting up as Texas Ranger, Stephanie `Steve' Reynolds, searches for a serial killer-hoping it's not her `sinfully' handsome vampire lover, Ethan Templeton. The duo work together to solve the mystery and are caught up in old jealousies from the past, murder attempts, and drug smuggling.

For first time readers, I recommend reading the first and second books from this series to fully appreciate the complexity of this romance. The storyline jumps to different time and places throughout the book, making it exhilarating, but, unfortunately, difficult to keep up with the action. In a few areas of the plot, I concentrated so much to understand what was occurring, that I lost the enjoyment of the book!

Diane Whiteside's book brims with the richness and flavor of the Spanish past making you feel at home in old-time Texas . The vampire culture and social structure are well thought out and intriguing. Those expecting Whiteside's usual dose of steamy scenes may be disappointed; however, those who have loved the heroes Don Rafael and Ethan Templeton will satisfied with this series conclusion.

4 out of 5 stars Loved it, but . . .   October 13, 2008
I wish there had been more about Ethan's beginnings as a vampire. In the first two books, you find out how the characters met and became vampires. With Ethan's story, you don't receive this information. Of course, you can read about Don Rafael Perez and Ethan in "The Hunter's Prey: Erotic Tales of Texas Vampires." But you still don't know how they met and how Ethan became a vampire. Whiteside does throw out a couple of teasers, one in which she tells us what Ethan was to Rafael and then we receive no more information.
I'm not sorry I purchased this book, just wish there had been more information on Ethan and perhaps a bit more of Ethan and Steve's romance. Although what was written about their relationship wasn't a disappointment, just a wish on my part for more.

4 out of 5 stars enjoyable paranormal romantic police procedural   October 9, 2008
1 out of 2 found this review helpful

Texas Ranger Stephanie "Steve" Reynolds is assigned as lead investigator into the serial killing of women throughout the state. Each victim has the same teeth marks on their necks. A bite Steve recognizes, though she is not a forensic dentist, as belonging to her lover Ethan Templeton or more likely she considers one of his kind.

A vampire charged to keep Texas safe, Ethan knows a rogue has invaded the state. He must bring the killer to justice while also keeping his beloved human Steve safe; as he thinks she is a probable target of the homicidal vampire. To keep her from harm, Ethan believes he must convert her into an undead, but he knows that doing this most likely means his demise.

The third "Bond" Texas vampire thriller (see BLOND OF BLOOD and BOND OF FIRE) is an enjoyable paranormal romantic police procedural. The story line is fast-paced; perhaps too fast as events flash by rather rapidly. However, in spite of an acceleration that makes the DC Flash look like the Turtle, fans of the undead world of Diane Whiteside will appreciate Ethan's dilemma re the mortal woman he loves.
