5 out of 5 stars From J. Kaye's Book Blog   November 19, 2008

When her first book came out, one reviewer said this series was J.R. Ward rip-off. I guess the person was referring to the tortured hero and the heroine who sets him free. If that's the case, I could list a lot more books that fit that description. This is romance and most in this genre follow a formula.

Over the years, I've read a ton of books in this field. I usually don't favor one sub-genre over the other. I search for something particular in each book and originality isn't it. I look for that emotional pull that is so strong, the reader can feel it physically. If the book is part of a series, I also judge how the author blends in other characters without distracting from the hero and heroine or the story itself. In my opinion, not all authors are able to pull this off. Not only does Showalter do both, but she does it with a masterfully.

The three books in her Lords of the Underworld series are THE DARKEST NIGHT, THE DARKEST KISS, and THE DARKEST PLEASURE. Most the time, readers can skip around in sequence - not so with this one. Each book builds on the last, so read them in order.

4 out of 5 stars Good Paranormal Romance   October 30, 2008

I could not wait to read this book. The first two were great. It may sound cheesy from the description on the back and the front cover, but don't let that stop you from reading it.

This time the story is about Danika, one of four women the immortals were commanded to kill in the first book. After being released, her family has gone into hiding, afraid that they will be killed by the immortals. Reyes is the immortal carrying the demon Pain, which means that he has the desire to self inflict wounds. Since seeing her from the first moment, he wants to be with her, but is trying to keep away. The immortals learn that the reason the God's wanted Danika's family dead was they knew how to find part of Pandora's Box. So, they hunt the family down again and try to find the box or clues to the boxes location.

I really like how this series has progressed. I cannot wait for the next several books to come out. A definite read for those that like Paranormal Romances.

5 out of 5 stars The Darkest Pleasure   October 26, 2008

The Darkest Pleasure by Gena Showalter is book three in the Lords Of The Underworld series and in my personal opinion also the best. This story is about the ancient warrior Reyes, who lives a tortured existence because he is also possessed by the demon of pain. Reyes' demon forces him to constantly harm himself and he can know no peace until the day that he meets the beautiful Danika, the one woman who can calm his demon...

It's been a while since Danika Ford has known any peace herself. Her nice normal life has turned into a horrible nightmare with no end in sight. For some reason Cronos the King of the Titans has put out a contract on her life and that of her family...

I know that I described The Lords of the Underworld books as my newest guilty pleasure and this book is no exception. I love all three of the books for this series but this one is my favorite for several reasons. 1. the world building is already done so the author was more able to concentrate on the characters. 2. The character of Danika is just so well done, she is one of the most likable characters that I've read about in a very long time. 3. Even though the book is 368 pages long I really wasn't ready for it to end...

2 out of 5 stars Dark Pleasure Book   October 20, 2008

It was okay. Not great, not bad. It is difficult to really like these characters. Not a series that I would run out and prebuy.

4 out of 5 stars Pain/Pleasure.....   October 16, 2008
I did enjoy this book....it was very well paced, held my attention, had incredible chemistry between Reyes and Danika, and told the continuing story of the Lords of the Underworld and their conflict with the Hunters. The search for Pandora's box continues, and you really need to read these in order to understand what's going on.

Maybe it's just me....but did anyone see a similarity with this book and Lover Awakened by JR Ward. If not for this comparison, I might have liked this book more than I did. Lover Awakened is probably the BEST paranormal book ever written, so anything in comparison CANNOT compare. Reyes demon Pain causes him lots of it. He needs to feel pain to feel pleasure....meanwhile the name "Zhadist" just keeps echoing in my head.

I thought the chemistry between Danika and Reyes was EXCELLENT! The story is getting a little silly if you ask me...all that Cronus/Pandora/Hunter conflict, but don't get me wrong....if Paris and Sienna/Toris and Cameo get a book...I'll be the first in line!
