This is the one marriage book everyone should read! July 8, 1999 46 out of 48 found this review helpful
I learned more about building and maintaining a happy marriage from this book than from all the other marriage books I've read combined, and I've read them all. This book is funny, easy to read, and filled with practical, solid christian advise. Dr. Dobson explains the differences between men and women and teaches basic lessons on communications and co-habitation that every married couple should know. I routinely give this book as gifts to newlywed and engaged couples. I've bought myself several copies because I keep giving them away to friends who have troubled marriages. I pray that God will bless your marriage as you read this book.
Negative tone and little practical advice March 5, 1999 28 out of 42 found this review helpful
Although I've always enjoyed listening to Dr. Dobson and was looking forward to this book, I have to disagree with many of the other reviewers and say that I was very disappointed. He spends the greater part of every chapter discussing in detail specific problems that he knows a marriage will face (interspersed with several advertisements for his other books) but gives very little practical advice on how to prevent these problems from occuring or how to work them out once they do occur. I bought this book for my fiancee for Valentine's Day and I'm sorry I asked her to read it. Instead, get "Love Life" and "First Years of Forever" by Ed Wheat. Both of these books take the opposite approach and provide (from the Bible) a wealth of positive and uplifting information on how to build (and rebuild) your relationship on a daily basis. He teaches you in practical and Scriptural terms how to love your spouse more and more every day. These books have made a tremendous difference in our relationship already and we plan to re-read them often. Forget Dr. Dobson's book and get the Ed Wheat books instead. You will not be sorry and your spouse will thank you!
Love should be for a Lifetime January 23, 1999 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I am familiar with Dr. Dobson and have a chance to hear him on Focus on the Family each evening on my local radio station. His book, Love for a Lifetime, is a wonderful read and clearly highlights aspects that a pre-marriage couple, newly married couple or any couple needing to direct their focus on the foundation of their relationship. I plan on using his book as wedding gifts for friends that are planning on taking a leap of faith as husbands and wives. Thank you Dr. Dobson for sage and practical advise.
Really focused on the true meaning of partnership love. January 3, 1999 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Whenever we get a wedding invitation we always know what we are going to get the couple - this book! It's great. We highly recommend it to all.
Required Reading August 12, 1998 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book is one of the best books on pre marriage building. It starts at the dating process but does not end at the altar. It tells you what you can do to KEEP your marriage going. This should be required reading for any newleyweds or a young couple contemplating marriage. All material is based on our Lord Jesus Christ.
