1 out of 5 stars Not for me!   January 15, 2003

I bought "A Jewish Odyssey" and even though I didn't understand the different languages I really liked it. So looking for some more good sounds I read the reviews and bought this one. If you like a kind of Jewish opera, this is the one. It's a little to "shrill" for me. If someone wants the one I have, played once........

5 out of 5 stars Inexpressibly divine   July 6, 2002

Although I own hundreds of CD's, this is probably the most incredible and precious disk in my collection. The funny thing is, I'm not really into folk music, much less Jewish music.

Nevertheless, the release of this album was an event -- a triumph!

One day I went into a small folk music store looking for -- I don't know what -- Greek music, I think, and wound up picking this up instead, without even hearing it first. When I got home, I couldn't believe what I was hearing -- and none of my friends had ever heard of it.

Folks, it is sublime. It is a mixture of Jewish folksongs and tunes from different countries, sung in different languages, all finely recorded. There are different singers, but it's all one band. The whole thing fits together so well with a consistency of sound, tone, and theme, that it would be impossible to pinpoint my favorite track. And the playing! The energy! The passion! I, for example, am unable to remain standing when I hear Track 5.

The CD is so emotionally exhausting to listen to, in fact, that I can only take it once every three months or so. One drop of this elixir and you will understand what Edna St. Vincent Millay meant when she wrote, "prithee, let no bird call"!

Additionally, there are many pleasant surprises in store for those who listen to it on a top-notch stereo system. The mixing was top-notch; every voice and instrument can be distinctly heard.

If I lost all my CD's, this is probably the first I would replace, and I will grieve loud and long the day I find it is no longer available.

If you've even a slight interest in folk music of the Mediterranean, this is a purchase you won't regret. Everybody I've given it to has come to wonder how they ever lived without it.

5 out of 5 stars Just buy it!   October 1, 2001

I bought this CD years ago, and it is still one of my favorites. A great mix of Jewish, Russian, Israeli, etc., both instrumental and some vocals. It has a "down home" feel as if you're listening in someone's big kitchen, yet the sound quality is fantastic. I have learned to play a few of these songs because they are so infectiously fun melodies.

5 out of 5 stars Great musical journey   September 17, 1999

I heard Kalinka on the local radio station and thought,"I gotta have this." I'm a big fan of Jewish music. Come to think of it, I'm a big fan of ALL music!

5 out of 5 stars Fun, frolic and soul touching.   December 12, 1998
A diverse mix of Russian, Israeli and Yiddish music which touches the spirit. Its fun to listen to; friends love it.
