2 out of 5 stars 25 dollars for fabric porn?   December 30, 2008
The font was minuscule, the diagrams were very difficult to follow and extremely wordy. The books was poorly edited, with missing projects, unfinished patterns, and diagrams placed willy-nilly. Yes, the photos of the fabrics are beautiful, but if I wanted fabric porn I would go on her website for free. I really got this for The Articles - no, really - and they stunk.

For a stylish Midwestern gal who draws inspiration from flea markets, one would think Ms. Butler would be more practical and understand her customers/audience a little more. After all, she wouldn't be Amy Butler without all the people who purchase her cack. Disappointing, confusing, underwhelming pictures, overwhelming instructions, unfinished and random patterns, and oh yeah - missing instructions. I want my 25 dollars back so I can buy 3/4 yard of her fabric.

2 out of 5 stars Difficult to use and disappointing   November 30, 2008
Given that Amy Butler is a talented designer, I'm disappointed that the design of the book itself is so weak. This book shows a disregard for the reader. The book is set in ridiculously small, hard to read type. And the illustrations are even tinier. I'm baffled by why the illustrations were even further scaled down and set on patterned backgrounds. It's as if the publisher decided to "pretty up" the book at the expense of anyone who actually wanted to make a project from it.

Why bother with the high production values and a nice stay-open spiral binding if it has such lousy page design and typography. Come on Chronicle, you can do much better than this.

This one is definitely getting sent back.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!   November 15, 2008

I love the projects in this book, and appreciate that there is a variety of things to make from pillows, to office items, to cat tunnels, to aprons. The patterns are simple and the instructions are clear and easy to follow, with diagrams and pattern pieces included. This is an asset to any sewer's library.

4 out of 5 stars From the perspective of a beginning stitcher   November 10, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

As a preface, I just started sewing. In fact, I don't even have a machine yet (waiting for Christmas), BUT I have sewed a skirt (different pattern), so I can follow a pattern. With that being said, here is my review:

Pros:
1. Great variety of patterns (from beginner to intermediate)
2. Comes with the patterns along with the book (very helpful compared to some "sewing books" with no patterns!)
3. The styles are cute and its something that me (a 25 year old) could wear/put around my house without being embarrassed
4. The material called for is reasonable (cottons, quilted cottons), easey to find and pretty reasonably priced

Cons:
1. The long explanations can get confusing
2. It would be nice if the author could rate the projects on difficulty
3. Some projects are a little too hard...for a beginner (who cannot make modifications.

Overall a great book for those who want to get their hand dirty in sewing!

5 out of 5 stars Amy Butler consistently puts out great products.   October 29, 2008

I've used Amy Butler patterns and fabrics quite a few times. Usually her patterns sell for $15 each, so this book of 25 projects is a great deal. The projects range from very beginning (pillows, laundry bag) to intermediate (patchwork throw, handbag). The projects would be great for someone wanting to try using vintage fabrics, and she does have a little resource list in the back of the book on where one can buy vintage fabrics.
