5 out of 5 stars Lots of interesting facts about Lionel   January 6, 2009
This book gives one a lot of interesting facts about the history of the greatest toy train maker in the world. They have survived all kinds of problems, and are still producing trains for collectors/operators of all ages.

4 out of 5 stars A must-have book for Lionel collectors   January 6, 2009
I have to admit that I am not a collector of Lionel trains nor do I own a train set (no room at home). Having said that, let me now say that this book is indeed a very detailed history of the Lionel company, focusing mostly on the time period 1900-1960. The narrative is accompanied by a variety of photos, documents, and other items that help tell the story of this legendary company. This book is a good model for other writers to consider, if they are looking to write similar books on other companies.

Personally, I could have passed on the incredible detail given to the first ten years of the Lionel company, but then I am not a collector, just a curious passer-by.

This book is best suited for Lionel collectors. Also for people who are interested in an aspect of the toy manufacturing industry.

5 out of 5 stars great train lovers book   December 30, 2008

5 out of 5 stars The Fun Factory   December 28, 2008
Without a doubt, this book is the holy grail of Lionel trains and their manufacturing plants. In depth written and photographic history as never told in one book. If you are serious about Lionel trains and their history, this is a must have book for your library. 5 Stars!

5 out of 5 stars A superbly illustrated and definitively informative history of the Lionel model train company and its popular toy trains   December 12, 2008
Few toys are of such an iconic force for nostalgia as the Lionel model train. Lionel train expert Robert J. Osterhoff draws upon his many years of research and expertise to present a superbly illustrated and definitively informative history of the Lionel model train company and its enduringly popular toy train creations that were to thrill children (and adults!) here at home and around the world. It's not widely known that the Lionel company was one of America's first mass market manufacturing factories. Osterhoff lays out the origins and early years of the company in the first of four major parts comprising "Inside The Lionel Trains Fun Factory" in 'Building the Fun Factories'. Part II covers 'New Opportunities & Diversification', Part III features 'Lionelers & Their Inventiveness', and Part V is a compilation of appendices detailing Lionel Factor Departments; Timeline of Major Lionel Fun Factories; and Lionel Patents. Enhanced with a bibliography and an index, "Inside The Lionel Trains Fun Factory" is a model of meticulous scholarship, thoroughly 'reader friendly', and a welcome addition to personal, community, and academic library American Popular Culture History collections in general, and the supplemental reading lists of all model railroading enthusiasts in particular.
