Product Description This practical, performance based methods text for middle and second school pre-service teachers is organized around four developmental components: *Why--gives the rationale to support the components that follow *What--what you will be teaching *How--how you will teach it *How well--how well you are teaching it. Organized into four parts that are then split up into ten modules, the text begins with a history of education going back to colonial times. The modules then cover the many and varied aspects of teaching pre and early adolescents, such as teaching students with exceptionalities, classroom management, diversity, instructional planning, using technology in the classroom, assessing student achievement, and self-assessment and continued professional development. The authors contend that the best teacher is one who has an eclectic style and can monitor their own progress and make changes and adapt their strategies if they are not succeeding. The ninth edition has been carefully updated to reflect the diversity and current topics in the field today. The book is a valuable resource for students today and as a reference for many years to come. New To This Edition: NEW!Improved balance of content between middle and secondary schools--this emphasizes that middle school is uniquely different from both high school and the traditional junior high school and that pre-and early adolescence is different from late adolescence. NEW! Technology has been integrated throughout every module of the book--New features including "Teaching Scenarios," "Activities," and "Technology Rich" features were added to all modules. NEW! Contributions from pre-service and in-service middle and secondary school teachers, teacher educators, and educational researchers have been added--to strengthen the tie between theory and practice.

Great resource for New Teachers! December 12, 2008 As an instructor, I have reviewed several texts to help preservice teachers prepare for teaching. This text provides excellent examples of several lesson plans from various subjects (Foreign Language, Math, Literature, English, History), and provides steps to developing integrated unit plans. It also provides several examples of student-centered activities. I like the Module set-up and organization of the text because it helps the learner tackle and master specific content at a time. This text prepares students for their evaluations in their student teaching and 1st year teaching positions by thoroughly covering the domains of Planning, Teaching Strategies, Communication, Assessment, and Professional Development.
Pragmatic. January 1, 2008 Good book for education. Module 8 is a little old school, but overall very practical and necessary.
good service September 17, 2007 My order arrived on time and in good condition. I do recommend the seller. I have no real complaints except for the price. I think the books were a little over priced but most books are. With that being said I would get my other books from this seller; hopefully the books will be cheaper.
long winded and haute July 29, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am taking an alternative certification program. This book was required. The book does have useful points. However, it is poorly written. The author was too wordy and used terms, not jargon, that made the reading all that more cumbersome. I quite frankly found myself losing patience with it and only skimmed the book just enough to get through the class.
Excellent comprehensive resource July 13, 2004 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
As a teacher and as a teacher-trainer, I have found this book to be an excellent source for readings and class discussions. It is a very practical book and is very detailed in describing all the options a teacher has in approaching different scenarios. I highly reccomend this to any beginning teacher.
