Product Description
Friedman suffered from exercise bulimia—a compulsion to purge calories through excessive exercise, and a rapidly growing eating disorder that affects some 400,000 American women. In Diary of an Exercise Addict Friedman recounts her descent into a life-threatening illness, her remarkable recovery, and the setbacks along the way. With refreshing candor she lays bare her relationships with family, friends, and lovers and the repressed desire that finally surfaced as she found her own way back to health.

5 out of 5 stars An attempt to exercise control   December 25, 2008
_Diary of an Exercise Addict_ poignantly details Peach's struggle with exercise bulimia--a serious disease that finally gets the attention it deserves. As Peach's life become more out-of-control and uncertain, she desperately reaches for a false sense of security by restricting her caloric intake and amplifying her exercise routine. An honest, candid, and enthralling read, Peach's diary offers both a warning about eating disorders, as well as hope for the (often long) journey of recovery. Highly recommended for anyone struggling with an eating disorder, and for those who are struggling along with them.

Well written, raw and honest. The book has something for anyone looking at their own personal growth and transformation through life's pages.

5 out of 5 stars A dad's perspective   December 8, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I read this memoir with difficulty because my own daughter experienced life and image-related experiences very similar to the author. Like the dad depicted in this book, I felt quite helpless to assist my daughter through the process and suffered along with her, and am grateful she has turned the corner. Parents with daughters suffering similarly would benefit highly from the insights provided in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring   December 3, 2008

Reading Peach Friedman's "Diary of an Exercise Addict" has inspired me, to say the least. While I have never suffered fully from an eating disorder, I believe that all girls can relate to Peach's words, about how we all secretly suffer from the social pressure to be unnaturally thin. But I digress from ranting about the media's pressure on women. In Diary of an Exercise Addict, it shows how eating disorders not only effect the person suffering - it hurts their family, it hurts their friends. This book reveals that it's not all just a matter of being skinny, of being "beautiful", but instead that there is much more to an eating disorder that meets the eye - quite literally.
Reading this book was heartbreaking. Peach is brutally honest, describing exactly what went through her mind, and it's almost as if you can feel the suffering in her words. It was definitely something I could relate to. This was not a book I could easily put down.

I recommend this book to any young woman, to open their eyes to see the awful truths behind eating disorders, and the damage it causes. To make them see that it's not a simple on/off switch, that it doesn't just stop when you reach 100, 90, 80 pounds. It's the most destructive of psychological disorders for a reason.

As a young woman myself, I have suffered from disordered thoughts. Reading this book has definitely helped me realize that destroying myself is not in the least bit worth it. We all need to learn to love ourselves and our bodies, and Peach's words have helped me to get started.

I apologize for the poor writing in this review, but those are my thoughts on the book. I highly recommend reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, Courageous, and Very Real   November 11, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

Peach Friedman provides a powerful, courageous, and very real account of her addiction to exercise and the long, rocky journey to her recovery from this rapidly growing, painfully isolating, destructive eating disorder. Not only do Peach's brutally honest words shed insight and understanding into the tumultuous sea of depression and anxiety that linger beneath the surface of this disorder's symptoms, but her story serves as an inspirational example that recovery is possible from this obsessive, all-encompassing disease.
