Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
With 464 information-packed pages and more than 500 gorgeous color photos, The Home Book is sure to become the homeowner’s bible on interior design. A beautiful object in itself, this book will grace every (perfectly chosen) coffee table...but only after this hardworking guide has been pored through and turned to again and again for practical, usable design insights.
The volume begins by taking a hard look at the bones of the house: its site, light, and layout. Armed with those basics, you’ll know which elements you can improve, and how to work around those that can’t be changed.

From there, develop an overall decorating concept based on theme, color, furnishings, wall and floor coverings, and accessories—each aspect of design receives detailed coverage. Finally, go through the house room by room to see what remarkable transformations you can achieve in every space, from the entryway to the home office, the kitchen to the foyer.

The Home Book reflects House Beautiful’s exciting style: fresh, bright and accessible, filled with insider tips from today’s top decorators, and bursting with practical advice for real people.

A Main Selection of the Homestyle Book Club.

5 out of 5 stars Big, Beautiful Book   October 21, 2008
 10 out of 10 found this review helpful

House Beautiful The Home Book: Creating a Beautiful Home of Your Own, by Carol Spier, is a lovely book to look through and a it is filled with really helpful information. In the introduction, Spier writes: "The Home book is a guide that will help you find, define and articulate the interior design that will make you happy." To that end, the book is filled with advice on how to personalize your home for you.

The book is loaded with gorgeous photographs that help you understand the design progress.

The book is divided into three parts:

* Understanding Your Home
Takes into consideration the site, architecture and layout. There are lots of interviews with architects and designers throughout. Additional goodies are "top 10" lists from designers and loads of practical tips.

* Elements of Design
Asks which designs makes us most happy. Suggestions abound, like making a clipping file of favorite rooms. Information on lighting, ambiance, walls, floors and much more.

* Design Room by Room
Each room is discussed and the elements from the previous chapters are pulled in. I liked this very much, as it is a practical way to understand the previous chapters.

The appendix includes the 7 essentials to create a beautiful home: a vision, good communication, sources, decision making, organization, time, and money.

The book contains enough information to decorate yourself--or to know how to hire a designer to get the look you want.

I liked everything about this book except for one aspect--it does not address anything green. However, there are lots of green home books available, and I suggest HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT:BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET to learn green and beautifying tips and BETTER BASICS for green cleaning tips.

In fact...I've decided to buy reusable tote bags and stuff them with all three books for my friends and family for the holidays!

Highly recommend The Home Book!
